We’re looking for a Community Manager

#DevTO is on the hunt for an awesome volunteer Community Manager to join our ranks and help us help us promote our content and events online across our different online channels.

Responsibilities. Include creating and managing a content schedule for the blog, managing the conversation on the hashtag #DevTO during and outside of events, curating tweets and content of interest for Twitter posts about Toronto tech, startups, and other tech events we promote.

Committment. The position would require around 10-15 hours per month, ( 4 hours of which are during the event).

Why join us? Although this a volunteer position, it is an excellent opportunity for meeting some fabulous folks in the Toronto tech community, as well as access to free tickets and discount codes to other events occurring in the city ex. jQueryTO, AndroidTO, FITC, etc., plus “DevTO” would look great on your resume and we will provide an amazing recommendation for your role as Community Manager if you are selected!

Teaching Technology – Shanta Nathwani

Technology is changing fast, and so does teaching. Shanta will talk about an innovative program blending communication, design, and technology run at Sheridan College in partnership with the University of Toronto at Mississauga. They are taught to be the translators of business needs to technology solutions and learn a little bit of everything, including web design and photography. Her students work on real projects with local clients and employers who are looking for practical skills and creative thinking. Shanta is always on the lookout for the next technology and skills her students will need to compete in a rapidly changing world.

Shanta R. Nathwani is an IT and Social Media Consultant and an Instructor in Web Design and CCIT Capstone at Sheridan College, which includes teaching WordPress. The ICCIT program is a joint program with the University of Toronto at Mississauga. She teaches students and small businesses how to use their websites and social media to increase their online presence leading to increased revenues and improved customer service. She has assisted companies to incorporate social media in the real estate, financial, non-profit, education and technical fields to name a few.

Technologies for Learning at Sheridan College – Marc Lijour
Sheridan students are involved in hackathons, working with the Toronto 2015 Pan Am and Parapan Am Games, and they learn actively with the latest video and collaboration techniques. Their students are career-ready, some of them launching their own business while in school. This presentation will explore the main technology infrastructure based on Cisco which makes all that possible, as well as the involvement of Sheridan in leading programs such as VROC and Connected North. Developers won’t want to miss hearing about cool technologies like CMX, Jabber Guest, and other technologies available on DevNet.

Marc Lijour is an educator specialized in technology and innovation. He joined Cisco last year to lead the transformation of education in Canada. He helps school boards, colleges, and universities design strategies to improve student success and experience, positioning Canada as the best place to work, live, play, and learn. Marc is also a developer and an adept of Free/Libre Open Source Software. His first job experience was to develop a pre-Web site on the late 80’s French Minitel network (Bell Canada launched a similar system branded Alextel). He started experimenting with Linux before the Y2K, installing school labs. Later, he worked for the Mandriva Linux distribution. Specialized in software engineering, and distributed work, he is a big fan of DevOps and the cloud.

Featured Startup: Sniply

Do you share content on social media? Like so many others, you are probably doing an amazing job driving traffic to other people’s websites.

Content curation has become an important part of social media. People share great content across the web to establish thought leadership and become a source of credible information for their followers.

While curation is great, it does take time. The challenge is that no one knows how to calculate, or even generate a return on investment for the time spent in curating content. At Sniply, we are making this possible with a new approach to link sharing.

laptop

Sniply is a simple tool that lets you embed your own message and call-to-action into any page on the web. For example, as you share an article from Mashable, you can use Sniply to embed a custom message and link back to your own website directly within Mashable. All you have to do is to input the URL of the page into Sniply, type a message, and Sniply will give you a special link which contains the article with your message inside.

mike               chris               nigel2

Sniply was founded in early 2014 by three Next 36 alumni, Michael Cheng, Christopher Bowal and Nigel Gutzmann. Michael specializes in product design while Chris and Nigel take the charge on software development. Within 4 months post-launch, Sniply already attracted thousands of users, acquired two of their competitors and expanded their team from 3 to 10 people.

Sniply links have generated over 1.3 million clicks so far and you can expect a conversion rate of 7-10% with every link you share. The best thing about Sniply is that you can share great content from your favourite sites but still drive traffic back to your own website.

Last but not least, Sniply is free to use! Check out this short video on how it works:
