Speaker change announcement

Sorry folks, we had a slight change in plans for this month. Please read the full announcement here.

Tom Green

In August of 2011, Adobe Edge was quietly offered on Labs and within a few days Adobe received a rather pleasant shock: Over 200,000 copies of the app had been downloaded and designers and developers were doing things with the app that Adobe had not even envisioned. Since then the application has undergone 7 revisions from an app that simply shoved pixels from here to there to one with a full compliment of pro grade tools that will appeal to everyone from hard core JavaScript programmers to designers looking for a visual motion graphics and interactivity application that get’s them into the HTML 5, CSS3 and JavaScript game.

Tom Green is also an Adobe Community Professional, a member of Adobe’s Higher Education Leader Program in the Post Secondary area and is a member of the Customer Advisory Boards for Flash Media Server, Fireworks and Edge at the Adobe Corporation.

Paul LaBerge – A Whirlwind Primer on Microsoft’s Modern Design Language

You’ve seen images (or even tried) Windows 8. You’ve seen Windows Phone unique style. You’ve experience the new XBOX dashboard. What do these things have in common? A modern design language that defines experience through a user-centric approach! In this primer, Microsoft will tell you exactly what their Modern Design Language is, what it isn’t (a hint: it’s not boxes, text and bright colours…), where it came from and where it’s going. By the end of this talk, you’ll know what will make an amazing, modern Microsoft app experience tick and how you can use it to further your own creative ideas.

Paul Laberge is a Technical Evangelist with Microsoft Canada, focusing on helping the developer ecosystem build great apps and services on Windows Phone, Windows 8 and Windows Azure.  Paul brings a wealth of experience from both a technical and business perspective with over 14 years of experience in product development and marketing, management consulting and technical evangelism.  As part of his role at Microsoft, he can be seen working directly with developers and designers building solutions for the Microsoft platform as well as speaking at events both in-person and online.  He is also passionate about great design and can be seen talking and blogging about Metro, Microsoft’s new design language.  Paul blogs on http://w00t.ms and can be found on twitter at @plaberge.

Sachin Monga – Social Design 101

Social design is a practice for thinking about software experiences as “multiplayer games” (as opposed to “single player games”). Real world and online experiences can be improved with software when they are personalized for you and your friends are with you wherever you are – and it’s becoming easier for us to bring our identities & friends with us to every online or real world experience. This session will cover strategies for designing any experience as social from the ground up, by drawing from examples on Facebook.com and apps built off the Facebook platform.

Sachin works on the platform team at Facebook Canada, focused on helping brands and developers build people-centric products by leveraging the Facebook Platform. Prior to joining the Canadian team, he did product marketing for OpenGraph at Facebook HQ in Palo Alto. Sachin studied Systems Design Engineering at the University of Waterloo and is a frequent instructor on the topics of social design and information distribution.

Spotlight: Android

The little androids, that could, have made their way into cell phones and tablets. The platform has gain insurmountable ground in the realm of the mobile space in such a short time, being one the top OSes on the market. Various companies, in the space such as HTC, Samsung, Motorola, and several others, have dubbed their devices with over seven iterations of Android. Android’s deployment is not only the most user friendly, but also, the quickest, allowing even folks with Eclipse and a few SDKs to get started through both native and html apps with just the syntax to master. Those smart little robots.  And surprisingly, we’re not talking about anything to do with Star Wars.

At #devTO 13, we’re giving away two FITC Spotlight: Android tickets(Approx. value for early bird 109.00) to get your learn on, June 23rd, with some of Toronto’s brightest Android builders,  including one of our regulars, Mark Lapasa, and talent from one of the leaders in the Toronto mobile game, Xtreme Labs. 7 technical talks that are definitely worth the visit. We’re also giving out a special discount code at the event!

Humber Digital x #devTO x ING Cafe

To follow up with the impressive attendance, Humber’s Interactive Multimedia Alumni of 2012 did the same thing that we #devto’ers pulled off last month:

Bring the awesome to ING Cafe!

But, unlike us: Humber brought their OWN talent to the spot including our latest photography talent Adam Chow(UI Developer), Daniela Turchiaro(UI Developer), Joanna Barretto(Graphic Designer), and Chris Flemming, of that class. Glad they were able to get the responsive design locked down already! App development via iOS was also present, and also, just as incredible. A great way to follow up after the FITC 2012 Best Canadian Student Website, JeJun Lee, win. Especially with …

… the branding! Daniela did an awesome job making her skill stick. What a calling card!

Glad I was able to pop in and take a peak at what the predessesors became and possibly will become. As one of their proffs and my favorite Humber alumni artist, Linda Nakanishi, pointed out that night: we can’t wait to see them in the industry!

Be sure to check out their new student portfolio reel.

Thanks to Greg, Tom, and James, for the catch-ups.

#devTO does Social Media Week Toronto

After 10 consecutive rounds( and a thanks for coming out to our first ever #devTO of 2012, which happened last Monday. Braving winter like that), we’ve decided to give our friends a bit of a background story. And with Social Media Week creeping around the corner, we’ve ALSO devised a session solely to deliver it.

#devTO 10. Or… Creating a community of Developers and Designers” for short. Atendy and Epilogger will also get a spotlight as they are a key part of #devTO’s story. Social Media Week’s focus is complimentary to the very meet-up that this post is referring to. Heck, this event WAS built through twitter btw.  We’re all excited about being a part of this worldwide event. Very much so that we’re doing the presentation with our two companies. Who better to know the story than the Full House-esque dads of #devto?  Talk about a real narrative!

“I went to the event posting and there’s no more spots! What’s up with THAT?!”

I know, I know: we’re sold out already and ALOT of folks can’t wait until March’s #devTO 11. Understandable. There MAY be openings, for sure, but the policies for SMWTO are pretty set in stone. There could be more spots opened in the next week! For those who had their Kung Fu-trigger finger coding hands: this will be at #Bnotions  on Monday, February 13th, 2012 at 6:30pm.

This month’s #DevTO is brought to you by:

#devTO and Design Edge Are Calling All Mobile Developers

We here at #devTO encourage the Toronto Interactive scene in app making. Heck, we’ve backed Atendy and Epilogger to produce a high calibur solution to both run and cherish those special events. Supporting a contest that can produce this sort of quality is no exception. Especially with our friends from Design Edge Canada involved. So…

WE’RE CALLING YOU OUT!

Yes, you with the passion for production. The ambition for quality assurance tests on even your own devices. Yes – you, the one with the innovative, head-turning idea that will shine on any platform. Whether it’s the Green Bots or looking through glass panes.  #DevTO is giving you a chance at Regional Design Award in Mobile Design glory with two free early bird entries to be used before February 3rd! You’re thinking…

No way! There must be SOME sort of catch to this!

A bit of leg work, on your part, is our style! If you’re still really reading this: you’ve guessed it right: there is ALWAYS leg work. Nael, Jo, Chris, and I, will be the gatekeepers here. We will be evaluating the best idea to send off to duke it out with some of the best app makers(yeah – I said “best”. You know how Toronto gets down with apps). Anyway,  to submit your entry idea thesis, get this to #devTO at contests@devto.ca with the subject of “Regional Design Award Winning Mobile App”. Make sure you have your name in the body someplace. This should be in our hands by Friday, January 27th, 2012. Design Edge’s rules for the submissions are here, too.  So…

Mentions of #devTO in the Community

Our friends in the Toronto developer community have been shouting out #devTO quite alot recently. Some more notable than others. Especially two that stuck out greatly:

Mark Reale, of Bnotions, topped his #AndroidTO shout out with his Popplet map of the Toronto Tech Community Events. Some of the most notable monthly events are here, including their sites and who to tweet to! Impressive work, man!

Also, Hack For A Cause had given us a shout out on Facebook HQ wall. I wonder who could have done THAT… hmmmmmm

Anyway, we’re glad to have Toronto’s back in the industry and look forward to meeting/drinking/coding/war-story-sharing/hanging with you all.
