Code of Conduct

In consideration of the benefits you will receive in being permitted to attend, sponsor and/or present at events (collectively, “Events”) hosted by DevTO Inc. (“DevTO”) (the sufficiency and adequacy of which is acknowledged), you agree to the following terms:

Expected Behaviour

DevTO is dedicated to providing a harassment-free experience for everyone, regardless of gender, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, race, or religion.

At all Events, you will conduct yourself in a professional, courteous and respectful manner including, without limitation, respecting physical and emotional boundaries, not using words that are racist, sexist, homophobic, classist, transphobic, cissexist, ableist, or culturally insensitive and respecting participants’ preferred pronouns.

If alcoholic beverages are served at the Events, you agree at all times to conduct yourself in a socially and ethically responsible manner and limit your consumption of alcohol to a reasonable limit. Event staff reserve the right, in their sole discretion, to deny or limit your access to alcohol in cases where your conduct violates (or is likely to violate) the terms of this Agreement or where you otherwise behave in an unreasonable manner.

Unacceptable Behaviour

At all Events, you will refrain from any harassment, oppressive behaviour, or exclusionary actions (both online or otherwise) including, without limitation, making any  aggressive, derogatory, or threatening comments; making any unwanted physical contact or sexual attention; participating in any deliberate intimidation or  disruptive conduct or use any sexual language or imagery. You will further refrain from any conduct that demeans, marginalizes rejects, threatens, or harms anyone on the basis of identity, background, or ability and will refrain from denying other participants the unrestricted opportunity to share their views, or any conduct engages in favouritism or creates or reinforces an inequitable learning environment.

Enforcement

If you are asked to stop any unacceptable behaviour, you are expected to comply immediately.  If you engage in sustained unacceptable behaviour, your permission to attend the Event will be immediately revoked and you agree to immediately leave the Event and agree that DevTO (or its agents or partners) have the right to seek your immediate removal from the Event and from any DevTO online group(s) or mailing lists. If a presenter engages in unacceptable behaviour during their presentation, DevTO may deem it necessary, and have the right to, end the presentation. You shall not be entitled to any refund of any Event fees in the above circumstances or if you otherwise violate the terms of this Agreement.

What to do if you need help

If you witness or are subject to unacceptable behaviour, or experience marginalizing behaviour that limits your full participation in any Events, please talk to any of the following people (identifiable by DevTO t-shirts and organizer pins) and/or email help@devto.ca:

Except as required by law, your communication will be held in confidence.

When you come to us with an issue during an Event, we will first endeavour to help you feel safe as quickly as possible. Next, DevTO and its organizers/ space host will meet to decide what our response will be. Then, we will warn or seek to remove the offender depending on the circumstances with a view to the safety of all Event attendees. DevTO will consider the involvement of local law enforcement as necessary or desirable in the circumstances.

Diversity and Inclusiveness Statement

DevTO is a community that values and recognizes diversity, and defends and builds equitable experiences. We welcome and advocate for the presence and contributions of all people regardless of their race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, cultural background, age, or other such factors.   Prejudice, oppression, and discrimination are detrimental to the health and growth of our community and the individuals who are a part of it. Supporting the visibility of our diverse lives enhances the experiences of all community members. We recognize and honour our differences and vigorously defend DevTO as a safe and equitable space.
