#EdAppHack: Saturday, October 25th & Sunday, October 26th

We’re going to be joining learners, teachers and community app developers this weekend at the MaRS Discovery District for the #EdAppHack, a two-day learning opportunity, using the Hackathon model to address the changing dialogue between students and their teachers, mentors, and  industry professionals. #EdAppHack will be focusing on the theme of STEM and using the hands-on experience to address concerns and talking points on the changing nature of education, all while creating original apps and with the aide of various supportive  collaborators. There’s also going to be a keynote by Robleh Jama, founder of Tiny Hearts,  an award winning app studio based here in Toronto, and lots of industry professionals from all ends of Toronto.

Both students and teachers will be able to get their hands dirty, work together and collaborate to brainstorm, build and pitch their app ideas, and it’s all going down this weekend.  To get involved, visit edapphack.com and sign up.

arkOS: Should Google be Afraid?

What exactly IS arkOS? It’s a Linux-based server OS that runs on Raspberry Pi hardware with hopes to expand to other platforms eventually. arkOS is meant to be an OS that replaces all of Google’s services – from email to chat, file sharing and web hosting, arkOS purports to do all the things that Google or any other cloud company can do… securely.

How did this start? When Google Reader was shut down, arkOS founder 23-year-old Jacob Cook decided to build something reliable that is not subject to shutting down:

“Google, while it is a great service that has done wonderful things for the Web, is showing some troubling signs,” … “Their shutdown of Google Reader earlier this year means that none of the services [we] rely upon are sacrosanct if they are not profitable enough for them.”

Cook has crafted an open-source Genesis application - so anyone can download and run arkOS. Check it out and if you like it, make sure to donate to Cook’s crowd funding campaign.
