Toronto’s Mini Maker Faire – Recap!

This past weekend was the Toronto Mini Maker Faire! What a great whirlwind of a weekend. From 3D printers making chocolate to tweeting typewriters, the event brought together over 4,000 people on the rainy weekend to partake in a DIY-wonderland.

Some of the other notable booths and workshops included:

  • Lockpickers (The Open Organisation of Lockpickers) spending a day  learning the mechanisms ockpickers (The Open Organisation of Lockpickers) spending a day learning the mechanisms in a lock — and learning how to open them
  • The Matter Form scanner – the first affordable and home use scanner to hook up to your 3D printer
  • The University of Waterloo’s 3D Chocolateering - which uses chocolate powder to create 3D printed items
  • MakerKids‘s ROBOTBATTLE! – the name says it all.

A list of all participating Makers can be found here

The maker culture has been gaining momentum for the last couple years, and this weekend really helped highlight the amazing advances that these Toronto groups have made. The event had many hands-on projects from adults and kids alike; the MakerKids‘ Toy Hacking Booth (video) encouraged kids to use their imaginations and ‘hack’ or improve on existing toys (some of the concoctions looked like they came straight out of Dr. Frankenstein’s laboratory).

This weekend really showcased a community that is growing. People from all over came to learn, hack and create. We can’t wait until next year’s event!
